The Rehearsal space…….

That’s where it all started really. A big cavernous room in the middle

of nowhere where Gordon, Gareth and Cam all started to tentatively

try out songs together.

Gordon and Cam had been there many a time before when they were

part of the Ice Cream Band (rehearsing and arguing just as much) and

more latterly the Bond Girls (rehearsing and not saying much to each

other by comparison). They even spent a good 2 days recording their

own ideas with a lot of coffee, munchies and trips to the chip shop.

Gareth and Gordon had first met at a mutual friends party where

Gareth was wearing a feather boa and dancing about. It was agreed

they should try jamming.

There was a common thread of bands that they all loved. The Clash,

The Damned, Ramones, AC/DC.

They introduced Cam to the Pixies in order for a few of their songs

to be tried out (he made a faux pas when he subsequently bought his

first Pixies CD as he bought Bossanova, the worst album they did

which made the others grimace).

Asides from the music, the emerging factor was a mutual love of toilet

humour and farting loudly. As a result, there is a long standing argument

between Gareth and Cam as to who will get the name “ The Dutch Ovens”

for their side project as they cant agree who thought of it first.

Fortunately this is a group who don’t argue too much (the only other

argument seems to be about whether or not Dune is a good film ?)

Essentially if its loud fast and hard, they’ll try it louder faster and

harder. But don’t worry …… there is some tuneful stuff with harmonies

(albeit louder faster and harder than the originals).

Along the way they found Alex, a young man who shared a common

view of the bands we liked (and who would play bass…. a rare breed

of men).

After an eternity of rehearsing at the Scout Hut in Heathhall and the

Oasis Centre in Dumfries, they even managed to play their first gigs

supporting The Stiffs and Twister.

Their own sporadic headline gigs followed. As time went on they started

to produce a few of their own songs into the set.

Much remains constant in the lives of the Uzis despite marriage and

impending fatherhood. They still fart a lot and watch daft films as well

as enjoy a few drinks now and then.

Next time you see a poster bearing their name make a point of going

along…. It’s a rare happening but a fun one
